Federal prosecutors claim Rinderknecht, who was working as an Uber driver at the time, ignited a brush fire in the Pacific Palisades on January 1. Despite efforts by fire crews, the blaze continued to smolder until it reignited amidst high winds, becoming one of the most destructive wildfires in Los Angeles history.
In a criminal complaint, authorities allege that Rinderknecht caused the fire by lighting a combustible material, such as vegetation or paper, with an open flame, likely a lighter. No motive has been disclosed, but during a news conference, acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli hinted at digital evidence, including an image allegedly generated by Rinderknecht using ChatGPT in July 2024, showing a burning forest and a fleeing crowd.
Rinderknecht is expected to appear for an arraignment in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles in the coming weeks.
