40 Years of NUIG KC Celebrations

Postby laoiseplunkett » Mon Oct 16, 2017 10:23 am

Full details of our celebrations (on Saturday, 16th December) for any of you who somehow managed to escape from the emails about it

Saturday morning
We are going to kick things off bright and early, meeting at Fisheries Field for a briefing at 10AM. We will be on the water (the canal by the slip) for 10:30AM, ready for a team mass start boatercross down the Lower Corrib. For any of you who would like to join us for this fun filled morning of paddling but haven't been in a boat since your college days, don't worry; there will be river leaders on hand to ensure that you make it to Spanish Arch in one piece. :-D :-D

11AM sees the start of the team boatercross races from Jury's Drop to the steps at Spanish Arch. Two teams will go head to head; the first team to reach the finish line (with all members and gear intact) will move on to the next round.

A limited amount of club gear will be available for use. Get in touch with our training officer at training@nuigkc.com if you will need any gear for the day. :call:

Teams
Teams for the boatercross and mass start will consist of three paddlers: one beginner (one-two years of paddling experience) one OFB and one expert paddler. Registration for the team races will close on Sunday December 10th. Teams will be devised randomly and released on Monday December 11th.
Each team must come up with their own theme (e.g. superheros). There will be a prize giving at the ball for the best team costume and for the winners of both races!

Saturday afternoon
Time-trial races down Double Drop; part of the Irish Whitewater Race League; will begin at 1:30 PM starting from a high seal launch on the Eglington Canal. This will be followed be a freestyle competition of the drop. While everyone is welcome to watch, anyone wishing to participate should be advised that an advanced level of kayaking skills is a must. Club gear may not be used on double drop.

Saturday night
Saturday night will take us to The Clybaun Hotel, Knocknacarra; with a drinks reception at 7PM before dinner at 8PM. Prizes will be presented to the winners of the Double Drop race after dinner. The ensuing antics will more than likely continue into the early hours of Sunday morning.  :d: :ninja:
