Club Trip Reports

Postby Brady » Sun Dec 05, 2010 7:33 pm

Trip Reports
This is where reports from club trips can be posted, once the trip has been concluded. To be filled out by the Trip Leader.

If you intend to go on a trip with the club, please fill out this form
You need to do this before you can go out paddling anywhere other than the canal or upriver. Only your trip leader has to fill it out obviously.
Before filling out the form, please make sure that you're familiar with the club guidelines (attached).

It's all very straightforward, and filling it out should only take you a few minutes, but if you have any issues feel free to give me a shout at either safety@nuigkc.com or at 0861637509.

Note: A club trip consists of any activity outside of the canal, upriver or the pool where club gear is used. It must be carried out in accordance with the club guidelines. It has to be sanctioned by the captain and/or the safety officer prior to the trip.

After your trip, just paste the following into your message, and fill it out.

Code: Select all

Date:
Location:
Level:
River Leader
Start and Finish time of trip:
People on the water:
Description:
Recommendations for future trips:

In the event that you feel some information may be too sensitive for posting here, that's fine, email the report to safety@nuigkc.com
Filling this form out is not only vital for the running of the club, but not filling it out will affect your chances of participation in further club events.

Date: 16/01/11
Location: Tuam
Level: 1.8
River Leader Mark McNally
Start and Finish time of trip: 1:30 - 4:15
People on the water: 18
Description: Beginner freestyle trip. High level made it more difficult to catch the hole, and meant people got washed down stream quicker. A few swims, but rescue was more than adequate for them. No serious incidents occurred.
Recommendations for future trips: On a hgh flow like that, do unconscious rescues instead of waiting to give a t-rescue, as you get pushed down past the bridge otherwise.

Level: Medium, 8 gates
River Leader: Simon
Start and Finish time of trip: 1500-1800
People on the water: Simon, Jamie, Ian, David Higgins, Gerard and Alan Herdman
Description: Practicing basic river skills (breaking in & out, ferrying), rope work
Recommendations for future trips: The tide was in, so we couldn't go under the bridge so try and bear this in mind when going down, though we just worked around it, doing stuff up at the fish gates and doing ropework on the slow moving water above jurys

River Leader: Jamie McCauley

Start and Finish time of trip: 4pm - 6:30pm

People on the water: Cathal Folan, Jamie McCauley, Deirdre Rooney, Mathew McCosgrave, Ultan O Byrne, Will Hurley, Aran Kilroy, Alan Herdman, Cathal Kelly.

Description: Practicing basic river running skills, ferrygliding, breaking in and out, river signals and some rope work at O'Briens bridge.

Recommendations for future trips: Check tides, we were forced to stop the rope work as the rising water level made the eddy behind O'Briens unsuitable.

People on the water: Andrew Regan, Cathal Folan, David Higgins, Simon Gordon

Postby Brady » Thu Oct 06, 2011 11:56 pm

Date: 5th October 2011
Location: Lower Corrib
Level: medium
River Leader John Brady
Start and Finish time of trip: 16:00- 18:00
People on the water: Alan Herdman, Aisling Corrigan, Andrew Regan
Description: Overview of the intermediate syllabus. Forward and reverse ferrygliding, breaking in and out, ropework, defensive swimming, offensive swimming, briefly went over boat-chasing.
Recommendations for future trips: Another person or two would've been better for the intermediates to act as a group on the water, instead of two individuals being taught. Grand otherwise.

Date: 7th Oct 2011
Location: Lower Corrib
Level: 10 Gates
River Leader David Higgins
Start and Finish time of trip: 16:00- 18:00
People on the water: David Higgins, Mark McNally, John Brady, Jamie, Simon, Eoghan Staunton, Ultan, Will, Phil, Ian
Description: Covered ferrygliding, reverses ferry gliding, breaking in and out, ropework.
Recommendations for future trips: Pre-plan your trip for a more structured session, so everyone knows their role. Don't take a duo when your meant to be session leading. Too many instructors can result in a 'too many cooks in the kitchen' type result.
